Jihiken Festival brings together aesthetic medicine professionals in Japan
Dr. Jae Yong Jeong of THE PLUS Plastic Surgery participated as a speaker at Jihiken Festival 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
“Jihiken” is the Japanese reading of 自費研. The festival is an event where clinicians and professionals involved in self-funded medical care not covered by health insurance share information on medical techniques, patient safety, education and clinic management.
Jihiken Festival 2025 was held from November 1 to 3, 2025, at the TOC Building in Gotanda, Tokyo. THE PLUS Plastic Surgery’s clinicians participated in lectures on November 2 and 3.
Problems that may arise after rhinoplasty and the role of revision surgery
Using surgical videos and clinical cases, Dr. Jeong discussed problems that may occur after rhinoplasty and revision procedures to address them.
Revision rhinoplasty is not simply a procedure to change an appearance that a patient dislikes.
It may also be considered when nasal tip support has weakened, the nose appears deviated, scar tissue has developed in the skin or soft tissue, problems involving implants or cartilage have occurred, or functional concerns such as nasal obstruction are present.
Previous techniques and materials, as well as the condition of the remaining cartilage and septum, differ from patient to patient. A thorough assessment and individualized surgical planning are therefore important.
Considering both nasal appearance and function
In his lecture, Dr. Jeong explained that rhinoplasty should consider not only external appearance but also the nose’s inherent functions, including breathing and the sense of smell.
Even when the nose looks natural externally, weakened internal support or a narrowed airway may cause discomfort. Conversely, focusing only on function without sufficiently considering facial harmony may produce an appearance that differs from the patient’s expectations.
Rhinoplasty should therefore be planned through a combined assessment of overall facial balance, nasal structure and function.
The importance of medical education and passing on surgical knowledge
Alongside Dr. Jeong’s revision rhinoplasty lecture, the event included video-based rhinoplasty lectures by THE PLUS clinicians in Japan and a plastic surgery education program involving medical professionals from Fujita Health University.
Safely advancing surgical techniques requires sufficient anatomical knowledge, structured education and guidance from experienced clinicians.
Through academic exchanges between clinicians in Korea and Japan, THE PLUS Plastic Surgery will continue sharing knowledge of primary and revision rhinoplasty and working to contribute to a safer aesthetic medicine environment.
